What Is The Gold American Buffalo?

Posted by Derek Sawchenko on

Authorized by Congress through the Presidential Coin Act of 2005, the Gold American Buffalo was minted for the first time in 2006. The design for this beautiful coin by James Earle Fraser was based on the Buffalo Nickel that was minted from 1913- 1938. The obverse of this new $50 coin features the well-known Indian head that is said to be the combination of three Native American chiefs. On the obverse, one will also find the word “Liberty,” the year in which the coin was minted as well as an “F” to commemorate the artist.  The reverse of the coin features the classic buffalo design. The buffalo on these coins was modeled after Black Diamond, a 1,155-pound bison living in New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s. The reverse also contains the inscriptions of the weight, the denomination and the gold content of the coin, as well as the mottos that have become a part of coin tradition, "In God We Trust" as well as "E Pluribus unum". What makes this coin so special is that the American Gold Buffalo was the first United States gold coin to be struck in .9999 gold. Normally, these coins were only minted as $50 dollar coins, but a special set was created in 2008, the only year in which different denominations were made. In 2008, a set of four coins was produced, introducing a $25 coin, a $10 coin, and a $5 coin.
